The land consists of approximately 1,020 acres of truly enchanting hills, arroyos, pinion and juniper and grass lands and improvements that have been cut into 40, 80 and 140 acre sections. It is very pristine, private land and has unobstructed views all the way to the horizon. There are several other large tracts of land available (see "LAND"). It includes the old ranch headquarters, well, power, phone, outbuildings and corrals. This land would make an exceptionally beautiful, private county home site, ranch, horse property or nature retreat. It has an incredibly rural, country feeling for something this close to town. From most parts of the ranch there is no sign of human habitation all the way to the horizon for 360 degrees. It is completely private with the Silver ranch to the north, the 30,000 acre "Cook" ranch to the east, a gigantic ranch to the south and a few $1,000,000+ homes hidden in the hills on large tracts of undividable land to the west. The land has such breathtaking southwestern beauty that many movies have been shot on adjacent ranches and is probably the reason several celebrities "discovered" this country and bought property near here. It also has a great history. It was occupied by the Anasazi, for thousands of years. The ruins of the San Lazaro pueblo are just south of the land. It was occupied when Coronado, stopped here in 1542, on his way to Pecos Pueblo in his search for the "seven cities of gold". He noted in his diary that the people looked very healthy and prosperous. He also noted that the Pueblo Blanco, directly across the arroyo from San Lazaro had recently been abandoned. The land is covered with traces of the Anasazi, things like pot chards, arrow heads, matate's, and fire pits. It's dotted with the ruins of the stone houses of the abandoned Spanish village of Ortiz. The old ranch headquarters is from the cowboy era and is presently occupied by a ranching family. It would make a great caretakers/gate keepers house and a place to keep horses. This would be a fantastic horse property or a nature lovers paradise. Because it is surrounded by large tracts of private land, it has become a haven for wildlife. It may be eligible for conservation easement status and the associated federal income tax credits. The improvements consist of the old ranch headquarters (a very run down old house), some old corrals, at least one well, power, telephone, and miles of fencing. You can see this land any time at your convenience. I keep four real gentle horses there. We can see the land by car, walking or horse back.
