Land

Santa Fe County New Mexico

Ranch land in Santa Fe county, New Mexico for sale, approximately 1,860 acres, breathtaking views of several mountain ranges and is surrounded by other large ranches that have been cut into 40, 80 and 140 acre tracts. It is unique in that it is still an operating cattle and horse ranch and has many wonderful features listed below. If you're looking for a property fairly close to Santa Fe, that could be used as a pleasure or horse ranch or a very private nature retreat this might fit your needs. The photos are very poor quality and the landscape is so huge and spectacular that it's difficult to photograph.

It has breathtaking views of the Sangre de Christo range (southern end of Rockies), the Jemez range, the Ortiz peaks and Los Cerrillos (little hills). The ranch consists of approximately 1,860 acres of truly enchanting hills, arroyos, pinion and juniper and grass lands. It's in several sections of 40, 80 and 140+/- acres and one section of 160 acres with the old ranch head quarters. It's  private and has unobstructed views all the way to the horizon. These Santa Fe, ranch lands are available separately, and the two tracts of land that would tie the ranches together are available from another owner, separately.

It has an incredibly rural, country feeling for something this close to town. From most parts of the land there is no sign of human habitation all the way to the horizon for 360 degrees. It is completely private with the 1,100 acre Barckay ranch to the north, the 30,000 acre "Cook" ranch to the east, a gigantic ranch to the south and an 8.800 acres tract to the west.

The land has such breathtaking southwestern beauty that many movies have been shot in the immediate area and is probably the reason several celebrities "discovered" this country and bought property near here.

It also has a great history. It was occupied by the Anasazi, for thousands of years. The ruins of the San Lazaro pueblo abuts the ranch. It was occupied when Coronado, stopped here in 1542, on his way to Pecos Pueblo in his search for the "seven cities of gold". He noted in his diary that the people looked very healthy and prosperous. He also noted that the Pueblo  Blanco, directly across  the arroyo from San Lazaro had recently been abandoned.

There is a "sacred spring" on the ranch, hidden in an arroyo with wild watercress growing below it. This may have been the reason the pueblos were build there. The ranch is covered with  evidence of the Anasazi civilization, pot chards, arrow heads, matate's, and fire pits. It's dotted with the  ruins of the stone houses of the abandoned Spanish village of Ortiz. The old ranch headquarters is from the cowboy era and is presently occupied by a ranching family.

This would be a fantastic horse property or a nature lovers paradise. Because it is surrounded by large tracts of private land, it has become a haven for wildlife.

The improvements consist of the old ranch headquarters (a run down old house), some old corrals, at least one well, power, telephone, and miles of fencing.

You can see this ranch any time at your convenience. I have four real gentle horses on the ranch. So we could see it by car, or foot (long walk, bring a lunch), or on horse back.

If you would like more information about this ranch, or many others I have access to I'll send you printouts with color photos as e-mail attachments. Send your criteria by clicking on the "CONTACT US BY EMAIL" link at bottom of page, or call:
